CPU Cooling: Air vs Water

How CPU Cooler Works?

When you purchased a CPU or Processor, it comes with a stock air CPU cooler by default. If you are a hard core gamer or someone who loves multi-tasking just like me, then you might want to upgrade this stock cooling unit to a much powerful cooler to increase the cooling performance when your processor do its job as certain programs, applications or games can stress your CPU to its limits and when this happened your processor really gets hot and of course you don’t want that, as it will shorten the lifespan of your CPU.

Types of CPU Coolers

Now that you understand how important to have a good CPU cooler, the next question is what type or kind of cooler will you buy? Well there are many types of aftermarket cooling units for computer processors, such as tower CPU air cooling kits, AIO (all in one) liquid cooling kits, custom water cooling kits, hybrid air and water cooling kits and etc. All of these kits comes in different prices ranging from $30 to $200 and what I will suggest here are the ones that are proven to be effective and widely used by many computer enthusiasts. Before you proceed with the list of coolers, I will try to explain as easy it is how each type of cooler works and also I want you to understand the pros and cons of both coolers, as every cooler definitely has an advantage and disadvantage and knowing this will also help you to decide which one you will buy.

Air Coolers

Air cooler type of CPU coolers have the same concept with the stock cooling unit (photos below) included when you purchased a processor. It comes with a copper base which directly contact with the processor and a small round heatsink (for Intel) or square shape heatsink (for AMD) with a fan on top to dissipate the heat. Most of the aftermarket air cooling towers comes with bigger heatsink (Single and Twin Towers), and double or triple fans support. Aside of the plain copper base, majority have several heat-pipes alongside which really helps to dissipate heat from the CPU.

Pros

  • Easy Installation (Read the manual please)
  • Aesthetics (there are many tower air coolers that looks really great)
  • Premium grade air coolers can match the performance of AIO liquid cooling kits
  • Majority of air coolers are cheaper compared to liquid cooling kits
  • Fail Safe (these type of coolers used fans and this will not just suddenly stop don’t worry)
  • Easy Maintenance (Just need to clean the fans and used a compressed air to blow off the dust on the heatsink/fins of the air cooler, this can be done once a month of thrice a year depending how hectic your schedule)

Cons

  • RAM clearance for bulky tower air coolers (You can’t use RAM modules with higher heatspreader)
  • Not all system case supports bulky tower air coolers

AIO Liquid Cooling Kits

Water cooling kits for computers have the same idea/concept in automotive where it comes with hose or tubings, water pump, radiator and fans. The pump of these AIO kits double as a CPU block which contact directly to the processor with it’s copper base and once the computer was turned on, the pump will do its job which is to circulate the water coolant inside going through the radiator back to the block and vice versa. Heat will then be dissipated through the radiator fins with the help of the fans. Water cooling kits can be controlled by the computer automatically using its dedicated program/software. By installing its dedicated program, user can see the actual temperature of the processor, the speed of the fans, change the LED lights for RGB supported devices, LED Light breathing effects and even set to different settings manually if you don’t want the system to decide for its own like going berserk and selecting performance mode where all the fans start spinning to its max RPM’s.

  • Available in different radiator sizes (120mm, 240mm, 280mm, 360mm)  to fit any size of system case
  • PWM Fans and Pump can be controlled automatically
  • No issues of RAM clearance / blocking

Cons

  • Price is relatively high compared to CPU air coolers
  • Pump possible to stop in the long run (this really can happen, I’ve seen/read a lot in the forums)
  • Leaks is also common in the water cooling (I’m not surprise with this one)
